Rail

Health and safety, alongside service availability, are the key drivers of the rail industry. Composites are ideal for many applications on the railways as they are lightweight, pre-fabricated to reduce possession time, fire retardant, waterproof, non-conductive and resistant to chemicals.

Infrastructure

The original rail infrastructure was built around 150 years ago. The upgrading and maintenance of this network is critical to the ongoing operation of our railways. Consequently, many of the projects we have undertaken in the sector have been part of the upgrade process.

We value the collaborative partnerships we have developed with civil engineering companies, leading to creation of products that are ideal to overcome a particular difficulty. These relationships form the basis of our working ethos on the railways, using the engineering knowledge of our partners and our understanding of the capabilities and limitations of composite structures.

FRP LOC Cases

Where stations, bridges and other track-side infrastructure are in the public eye, it is important to maintain a quality of finish that gives passengers and passers-by the right impression of our railway and pays homage to the industrial heritage from which the network was developed. We have used composites in situations where traditional materials would be difficult to apply, expensive to source or impossible to retro-fit. In many of these projects, we have used composites in a way that emulates another material or finish but offers durability and longevity, freedom from rusting or corrosion and potential to create a barrier against graffiti. We continue to develop new ideas in collaboration with our clients to improve the railway’s visual impact in a safe, cost-effective way that will last into the next century. Platforms and stations

A station is the physical interface between the railway company and its customers, and it is a reflection of the company and its operations. As platforms are extended and new stations are built, there is an opportunity to use composites to blend the old with the new. The result is attractive, safe to install and use whilst having longevity.

We have worked on mainline, underground and overground stations, upgrading platforms and station surroundings. Consideration for the travelling public is demonstrated by pre-fabrication of items to minimise on-site time and disruption to journeys.
